How to reach us
The Central Karakorum National Park can be approached from each district. But major portion (>60%) of the Park area falls within Skardu and Ghanche districts of Baltistan, so the most common entrance into the Park is Skardu. Skardu is accessible via a 45 minutes Boeing/ATR flight from the capital territory Islamabad. Summers are the rush hour time and one needs to reserve a seat well before time.
The alternative option is the majestic Karakoram Highway (KKH) through narrow valleys and Rocky Mountains of the Indus valley. The 27 hours journey on the bending road along the River Indus at some places more than hundred feet above the river is a unique adventure. Bus and coach service are operational on daily basis from Pirwadai in Rawalpindi (Pakistan) to Skardu, while private vehicles can also be hired from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. If one wants to shorten the journey by three hours and capture the beauty of Kaghan and Naran valleys, then hiring a jeep to travel by the famous Babusar Pass is much thrilling.
From Skardu, the nearest entrance point is Shigar valley, just one an hour drive from Skardu city. Mostly the visitors including trekkers and climbers enter into park through Shigar (Askoli Medan Entrance point). Public and private transport is also easily available from Gilgit to almost every part of the CKNP, from Hushey (eastern end) to Hisper valley (western end). Accommodation facilities are available at Skardu with many options ranging from dormitories to well-furnished single beds with hot bath. Hotels famous among tourists are PTDC Motel, Shangrilla Hotel, Concordia Motel, Masherbrum Inn, Baltistan Continental (BC) Hotel and Hilton Hotel etc. But the most amazing accommodation would be a night stay in the 700 years old Forts of Shigar and Khaplu. The old Shigar and Khaplu Forts have recently been renovated by the Aga Khan Culture Services Pakistan and are now maintained by Serena Hotels Pakistan. Tourists intending to visit Nagar valley of CKNP can stay at Diran Guest House Minapin, Guest Houses at Hopper or Hunza.
